Interview with ERMA alumni: Gian Marco Moise

What is your current professional role, and how did the ERMA program influence your career path?
I currently work in the field of civil society and democracy support, with a focus on grantmaking, based in Brussels. The ERMA program played a pivotal role in shaping my academic and professional journey. It helped me refine my research and analytical skills, which laid a strong foundation for my PhD studies at Dublin City University, where I later graduated in 2023. During my doctoral work, I published several academic papers and a monograph, all building on the solid grounding I received through ERMA.

Can you share a memorable experience from your time in the program?
There are many memories I cherish from ERMA, but one that stands out is our visit to Srebrenica—a deeply moving and formative experience that left a lasting impression. I also fondly recall my internship with Terre des Hommes in Kosovo and our thesis writing retreat in Italy. Beyond the academic journey, ERMA also shaped my personal life profoundly—I met great friends and even my future wife during the program. Sarajevo, where much of our time was spent, continues to hold a special place in my heart.

How has being part of the EAN Network benefited you personally or professionally?
Being part of the EAN Network has been a valuable extension of the ERMA experience. It has kept me connected to a vibrant, interdisciplinary community of professionals and researchers working on human rights and democracy. These connections have opened up opportunities for collaboration, idea exchange, and professional development.

What advice would you give to current and prospective ERMA students?
Make the most of the unique blend ERMA offers—strong academics, regional immersion, and a diverse cohort. Be open to learning not just from professors, but also from your peers and the places you’ll encounter. This program can open many doors—academically, professionally, and personally—if you fully embrace the journey. But while you will be growing as a human being, please be aware that the world is becoming bleaker and the space for human rights is shrinking. We need human rights advocates more than ever.
