The European Regional Master’s Programme in Democracy and Human Rights in South East Europe (ERMA) invites you to the public lecture ‘’Khulumani Support Group and the Search for Justice in South Africa’’, to take place at the Center for Interdisciplinary Studies of the University of Sarajevo on May 17th from 17,00 to 18,30.
”The Khulumani Support Group (Khulumani) is a 105,000-strong social movement of survivors that was formed in 1995, on the eve of the start of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission in South Africa (the TRC). After the TRC, Khulumani shifted its focus to campaigning for the ‘unfinished business’ of the TRC including campaigning for a process that will include thousands of survivors excluded from the TRC, for the prosecution of perpetrators that did not receive amnesty, for reconciliation processes that go beyond elite reconciliation and for a comprehensive reparations scheme.
This talk, presented by the chairperson of Khulumani, will offer a critical appraisal of the South African transitional justice process, consider transitional justice-from-below initiatives and explore the role that movements of survivors can play in sustainable peace and social reconciliation efforts.
The speaker of the event will be Mr Tshepo Madlingozi, Senior Lecturer, Faculty of Law, University of Pretoria, while Dr Iavor Rangelov, Assistant Professorial Research Fellow, London School of Economics and Political Science will chair the session.
This event is part of the course ‘’Comparative Transitional Justice: Retributive and Restorative Approaches’’, organized in the framework of the Global Campus of Human Rights Exchange of Lecturers 2017 and coordinated by the European Regional Master’s Programme in Democracy and Human Rights (Sarajevo/Bologna), with the Regional Master Programme in Human Rights and Democratization in Africa (Pretoria).
