INTERNATIONAL DAY OF SOLIDARITY WITH THE PALESTINIAN PEOPLE: GCSEE/ERMA students Stand in Unity for Justice and Peace

We, the students of the European Regional Master’s Programme in Democracy and Human Rights in South-East Europe (GCSEE/ERMA), class of 2023-24 wish to express our commitment to the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinians, observed on 29th of November. This significant day serves as a global call to action, urging individuals and organizations worldwide to express solidarity with the Palestinian people and advocate for their fundamental rights.

Solidarity holds a  profound  importance  to the  Palestinian  people  as they navigate  the complex and continuing challenges arising from the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The concept of solidarity represents a beacon of hope and unity. It transcends borders, cultures, and backgrounds, fostering a global network of support that amplifies the voices of those who seek justice, human rights, and a peaceful resolution. For Palestinians, international solidarity is a powerful affirmation that their cause is not forgotten, that their aspirations for self-determination are recognized, and that the world stands with them in their struggle for a just and lasting peace. It serves as a reminder that, in the face of adversity, the bonds of empathy and shared humanity can transcend political divides, creating a collective force that strives towards a future of dignity, equality, and coexistence.

The recent escalation of the 54-day conflict merely highlighted ongoing issues of unequal treatment and apartheid, as well as external and internal selectivity in the solidarity and the defence of human dignity, which the world has witnessed for over seventy-five years. As students who come from all parts of the world, studying in Sarajevo, a city that was under horrific siege in the early 1990s, we understand our position of privilege to be able to send this message from a peaceful place. We demand an immediate permanent cease-fire, the establishment of positive peace, and the protection of human rights on all sides. Our wish is that young people of all ages in Palestine can continue learning and contribute to development of their society.

The International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, recognized by the United Nations, symbolizes a collective effort to address the longstanding and complex issues faced by the Palestinian population. As Human Rights advocates, we urgently call on the international community to exert pressure to put an end to the crimes committed by the Israeli army against  the people  of Palestine. We firmly believe in the importance  of fostering understanding, empathy, and support for the Palestinian cause, promoting a just and lasting resolution to the conflict.
